Link Building – Forums

For search engine optimization, link building is one of the most elusive keys. I’ve tackled the topic before in broader strokes, but today I’m going to get a bit more in depth with how to create links by posting in appropriate foums. The key to building your seo by creatign as many links going into your site as possible is to make the links come from outside sites that are relevant to your product or service. For this blog, I’ll use my business as an example. Marcus Interactive Website Marketing Solutions works with small and mid-sized businesses to market their existing websites to a wider audience and improve their bottom lines. So, I’m going to look at small business forums as well as technical forums related to digital marketing, social media marketing, search engine optimization (SEO) and pay per click advertising. Now, I’m not going to post just a single sentence, though you can, but I want something that not only builds a link, but lets people know that I know what I’m talking about. While this isn’t critical from a strictly SEO perspective, it is from a human perspective. I’m writing to my potential client base and I want them to know that I know my business.

The value of these links cannot be overstated. Now, it may seem like a pretty overwhelming chore and you may want to off-load it to some intern or even hire a firm to do this for you. I would ask you to think twice about doign this. Yes, it’s labor intensive, but 20 minutes a day can make such a huge difference to your business, this is one thing you do want to take on yourself, or at least a senior member of your management team. i use a simple spreadsheet to keep the forums in order and simply put a date in to show when I commented in that forum. Now, the one aspect of this you can off load is finding all the forums that are appropriate. You could use a firm like mine or an intern to do the initial legwork.

In closing, please take this above all away from this blog. Bad linkage can hurt your page ranking more than good linkage can help. Relevance is the key, but while you’re at it, show off your knowledge and make your postings the go-to ones for good information.
